School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. The role of the Board of Governors is to ensure high standards of achievement for all children in the school by:
Setting the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction;
Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; and
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
The Board of Governors works in close partnership with the Headteacher, school staff and the Local Authority (Northamptonshire County Council). The Board is responsible for monitoring and promoting the highest standard of:
Outcomes for children
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment
Personal development, behaviour and welfare
Effectiveness of leadership and management
Effectiveness of the Early Years provision
Additionally, the Board of Governors is responsible for meeting all statutory requirements applicable to both staff, as an employer, and pupils.
At Thrapston Primary School, our Board of Governors consists of thirteen members, drawn from a variety of backgrounds. The Board includes two elected Parent Governors, one Staff Governor, one Local Authority Governor, two Partnership Governors and the Headteacher. The remaining six members (Co-opted Governors) have been appointed to the Board because of the specific skills they possess.
If you are interested in learning more about the role of a school governor at our school, or school governance in general, we would be happy to talk with you. The Chair of Governors can be contacted via the following email. Additional information about school governance is also available through the National Governors’ Association.
