The Glow-worm is Britain's only native species of firefly and has charmed people for generations.
Many of us know the name ‘Glow-worm’, perhaps from fairy stories or from poetry, but far fewer know the creature itself, or even realise that it can be found right near Lacey Green ... but only if you know where and when to look.
We have secured local expert John Tyler to take us on an insect's-eye journey through the life of this fascinating creature, from egg to adult, looking at how it hunts and feeds, how it defends itself and of course how (and why) it produces its magical light, as well as taking us on a tour to see the glow-worms for ourselves, in the short season which they are available to see.
The guided tour will take place at Brush Hill. We'll meet at 9.30pm, starting from the Whiteleaf Cross car park for a brief introduction to glow-worms - what they are, how and why they glow, and how they live - before going off in search of them (finishing about 11pm). The walks are suitable for all ages, but involve moderately steep slopes.
The site is on a slope, with just a couple of gates to negotiate, and the surface is not normally very muddy unless we have had a lot of rain, so a reasonable pair of walking boots should be all the footwear you need. If you have a torch and/or a magnifier it would be worth bringing them along.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these amazing creatures.
With an event of this nature, there is potential that it may have to be cancelled due to the weather. Please provide a mobile number when booking, so that we can contact you concerning arrangements if required.
Parents/Carers must accompany their children to the event and are responsible for their children at the event.
Unfortunately we don’t have any future events planned at the moment.
